If teaching Black History at home has ever felt overwhelming, you’re not alone.

Maybe you’ve felt this too:

"Everything starts with slavery or struggle."

"Most books feel too heavy for my child’s age."

"I don’t want to traumatise my child."

"My child loses interest almost instantly."

"Why does Black history always feel like homework?"

"Where are the joyful stories about us?"

"I want something simple, gentle, and meaningful."

Every parent I’ve spoken to said the same thing:

"I want to teach my child Black history…but I don’t know where to start.”

The tools we’ve had were never built for young children.

I’ve lived this struggle for over 16 years of homeschooling.

I’m Pappi, a Black homeschooling father of three.

For years, I tried everything to teach Black history at home — books, worksheets, videos, activities… and almost every time —

my children’s spark faded.

Their curiosity dropped.

Their excitement disappeared.

Then one evening, my daughter closed her book, looked at me, and asked:

“Dad… why don’t any of these stories have heroes that look like us?”

That question stopped me.

It cut deep.

Because I never wanted my children growing up in a world where they felt unseen… or disconnected from our own stories of brilliance, resilience, and victory.

And in that moment, I realized something important:

If the right stories didn’t exist, I had to create them.

Stories that were warm.

Stories that were joyful.

Stories that felt emotionally safe.

Stories that felt like their world — today.

And this February… those stories finally arrive.

I built a new way — created with cultural care, warmth, and joy.

After speaking to parents, educators, and homeschoolers across our community, one truth became clear:

Our children need Black history that feels gentle, joyful, and emotionally safe.

✘ Not heavy.

✘ Not overwhelming.

✘ Not school-like.

✘ Not trauma-first.

Something that helps them:

✔ Feel included

✔ Stay curious

✔ Feel emotionally safe

✔ See themselves in the story

✔ Build identity and belonging

✔ Enjoy learning, not dread it

So that’s what I built.

A new way to introduce Black history at home — launching this February.

✘ Not a curriculum.

✘ Not a textbook.

✘ Not worksheets.

✘ Something warm.

✘ Something joyful.

Something children naturally run toward.

Because our children deserve to see themselves at the centre of the story.

Eli & Naya aren’t just characters — they’re mirrors of our children today:

Curious.

Imaginative.

Sensitive.

Thoughtful.

Full of potential.

I created them to be a gentle bridge between:

✔ Young Black children today.

✔ The history that belongs to them.

When children see Eli & Naya exploring, asking questions, discovering…

✔ They see themselves.

✔ They see connection.

✔ They see belonging.

They see a story that finally includes them.

That’s why the project carries their names — because this movement is about our children finding their place in their own history.

Created with love, purpose, and lived experience.

I built Eli & Naya because I didn’t want my children growing up feeling unseen or disconnected from their own story.

I wanted something warm, joyful, and emotionally safe — something that reflected their world.

If the right stories didn’t exist, I knew I had to create them.

This February, those stories finally arrive.

Parents told us the same thing: “We’ve needed this for years.”

“That is great! Looking forward to it!”

- K. Johnson

“I think that the characters look welcoming! Warm, vibrant.”

- E. Waterman

“I love the realistic Afros, natural, hair
textures and nicely melanated skin!”

- D. Daniels
